Child Friendly Privacy Notice
Who are we?
We are Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council. We help people who live, learn or spend time in Redcar and Cleveland. We run lots of services, such as schools, libraries, social care, housing, roads and services that help keep children and young people safe.
What is personal information?
Personal information means information that is about you. This could include your name, address, date of birth, school, or information about people who look after you.
Some information is more private, so we take extra care with it. This could include information about your health, disability, religion, ethnicity, or any help and support you need.
Why do we use your personal information?
We use your personal information so we can understand who you are and give you the right help and services. We only ask for information when we need it.
We may use your information to:
- contact you, your parent or carer when we need to;
- help you get the services or support you need;
- support your learning and wellbeing;
- help keep you and other people safe; and
- follow the law.
Who might see your personal information?
Sometimes we need to share your information so we can help you, keep you safe, or do something the law says we must do. We only share what is needed, and we are careful about who we share it with.
We may share information with people or organisations that are helping you, such as your school, doctor, family, social worker, the police or the fire service.
Sometimes another organisation helps us provide a service. If they need to use your information for us, we make sure they follow rules to keep it safe. If information ever needs to be sent outside the UK, we will make sure extra safeguards are in place.
How long do we keep your information?
We only keep your personal information for as long as we need it. Sometimes this may be for a long time, especially if the law says we must keep it.
We have rules that tell us how long different types of information should be kept. When we no longer need your information, we will delete it safely.
Do you have a say?
Yes. You have rights over your personal information. This means you can ask us questions about how we use it and what we do with it.
You can ask us what information we have about you. You can also ask us to correct it if it is wrong or ask us to stop using it or delete it in some situations.
Who checks we are doing the right thing?
The Council has a Data Protection Officer. Their job is to help make sure we use personal information properly and keep it safe.
If you are worried about how we use your information, you can speak to a trusted adult or contact our Data Protection Officer.
