Redcar and Cleveland marks the Holocaust Memorial Day

Tuesday, 27 January, marks the National Holocaust Memorial Day and residents of Redcar and Cleveland are invited to commemorate the fallen and pay tribute to those who survived during a ceremony hosted by the Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, Councillor Ian Hart, in Redcar’s Garden of Remembrance. 

The ceremony will commence at 10am and will start with a speech from the Mayor, followed by prayers by the Reverend Rebecca Haughty, Vicar of Coatham and Dormanstown, poem readings by Mr Eric Howden BEM, President of Redcar British Legion, Statement of Commitment by Reverend Rebecca Haughty, a last post and silence by the Redcar British Legion and laying of flowers at the Holocaust Tree. Those attending will then be invited to the Mayor’s parlour for hot drinks.

The Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, Cllr Ian Hart, said: 

"Holocaust Memorial Day is a time to pause and reflect on one of the darkest chapters in human history. It is an opportunity to honour the memory of those who lost their lives and pay tribute to those who survived. By coming together as a community, we reaffirm our commitment to stand against hatred and prejudice in all its forms."

Leader of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, Cllr Alec Brown, said: 

"Remembering the Holocaust is not only about looking back, but also about ensuring those atrocities never happen again. This ceremony is a reminder that we all share a responsibility to promote understanding, compassion and solidarity within our borough."
