Redcar and Cleveland honours Armed Forces Day

People have come together on Redcar High on Saturday 27 June, to honour our service men and women.

The day started with a parade of serving military personnel, veterans and cadets, marching along the High Street and the raising of colours.

This was followed by a welcome from the Royal British Legion, a civic address from the Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, Cllr Ceri Cawley, a service of prayers, the sounding of the Last Post, a two-minute silence and the National Anthem.

The Council’s Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Dave Taylor together with The Mayor and Lord Lieutenant presented our army, air forces and sea cadets with awards during a special ceremony.

Throughout the day, there was a variety of entertainment and activities from live music, dance displays, a cadet drill competition and a range of stalls for visitors.

The event closed with the traditional Evening Colours ceremony.

The Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, Cllr Ceri Cawley said:

“Seeing so many people gathered today to honour the bravery and sacrifice of our Armed Forces past, present and future was deeply heart-warming. I would like to thank everyone who made this event possible.”

Armed Forces Champion at the Council, Cllr Dave Taylor, said:

“Armed Forces Day has once again brought communities together. This day allows us to recognise and show our gratitude to those who serve and have served our country and we are very proud to also celebrate our cadets and their achievements. Thank you to everyone, especially the Royal British Legion, for bringing this event to life.”
