New parking restrictions for motorhomes on Marine Parade, Saltburn, will come into force ahead of the summer season as part of an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO).
The changes are designed to balance the needs of local residents and visiting motorhome users, following concerns about vehicles parking on Marine Parade for extended periods.
These new parking restrictions are to come into force on 6 July 2026.
What the restrictions mean
Motorhomes will only be permitted to park in the existing marked bays on the north side of Marine Parade. These bays are subject to a maximum stay of four hours, with no return permitted within four hours of the initial period. This restriction applies to all vehicles from Monday to Saturday between 09:00 and 17:00. Outside of these hours, and on Sundays, no time restrictions will apply in the marked bays.
Motorhomes will be prohibited at all times from parking on the remaining unmarked sections on both the north and south sides of Marine Parade. These areas will be identified by single yellow lines and appropriate signage. Other vehicles will still be able to park in these locations without restriction.
These measures do not introduce a complete ban on motorhome overnight parking; however, they will limit where motorhomes can park and the duration of their stay on Marine Parade.
These measures do not introduce any new parking charges.
Cllr Carl Quartermain, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said:
“We have listened to feedback from both householders in Saltburn and motorhome owners who wish to spend time visiting the town.
“The new restrictions will provide an area for motorhomes to park while introducing a time limit on how long they can stay, helping to ensure parking spaces remain available for residents and visitors alike.
“We recognise that people hold strong views on this issue and that is precisely why we are introducing the measures through an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order. We will continue listening to residents, businesses and visitors throughout the trial period, carefully considering any comments, concerns and evidence before deciding on the long-term future of the scheme.”
Residents' permits
Properties on Marine Parade between Garnet Street and Saltburn Road are eligible to apply for a resident's permit. Permit holders can park in the marked bays without a time limit.
Residents who are eligible will be contacted by letter with details of how to apply. Applications must be submitted within four weeks of receiving that letter, either by post to the Parking Team at Redcar and Cleveland House, Kirkleatham Street, Redcar, TS10 1RT, or in person at any Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council library.
Residential properties can apply for one permit per vehicle registered at the address, plus up to two visitor permits. Business properties can apply for one business permit.
What is an ETRO?
An Experimental Traffic Regulation Order allows the council to test the impact of a scheme in real conditions before deciding whether to make it permanent.
Formal objections specifically regarding whether the measures should become permanent can be made within the first six months of the order coming into force. The council may also amend the scheme during that period in response to feedback and monitoring.
An ETRO can remain in force for a maximum of 18 months, after which the council must either make it permanent or allow it to lapse.
Enforcement
The council's enforcement team will be responsible for monitoring compliance with the new restrictions.
Disabled badge holders
No disabled parking bays are being removed. Disabled badge holders can park in council car parks free of charge. On Marine Parade, disabled badge holders who are not in motorhomes can also park in the areas marked with a single yellow line restriction.
