Cabinet to discuss plans for food waste recycling service

REDCAR and Cleveland Council’s Cabinet will discuss plans for the introduction of a new weekly food waste recycling service when they meet on Tuesday, November 4.

All households in the borough will be eligible for the new service which will come into effect from spring 2026 in line with new Government requirements.

Residents will be provided with a 5-litre internal kitchen caddy, compostable liners and a 23-litre kerbside container, with weekly collections due to start from spring next year.

Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Cllr Adam Brook, said:

“Food waste recycling is a major step forward in improving how we manage our waste across Redcar and Cleveland.

“A significant amount of what ends up in our bins is food waste and by recycling it separately we can help reduce emissions and make our area cleaner and more sustainable.

“I am really pleased with the collaborative work that has gone into planning this new service with our local authority neighbours and look forward to working alongside our residents to deliver it.”

The Cabinet report also highlights the environmental benefits of recycling food waste, including its role in reducing emissions and generating renewable energy through anaerobic digestion.

The council is working in partnership with neighbouring authorities to coordinate procurement, communications and rollout efforts.
