Work completed on Redcar’s historic Boating Lake

Restoration works have been completed at Redcar’s much-loved historic Boating Lake.

The 100-year-old lake, a cherished part of the town’s heritage and a favourite spot for generations of residents and visitors, has been carefully brought back to life thanks to specialist and complex repairs after it struggled to retain water.

Investigations found significant cracking throughout the entire concrete basin slab, which required labour intensive repairs to be carried out by hand, covering over 2,800 metres. Sections of the lake were isolated using cofferdams, which are temporary enclosures that block off sections of the lake, to allow for detailed work.

Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council today (Wednesday 10 September) confirmed that, following a rigorous testing phase, the lake has retained water and can be reopened to the public.

Cllr Alec Brown, Leader of the Council, said:

“We’re proud to have brought the much-loved, 100-year-old Boating Lake back to life for residents and visitors to enjoy. We’d like to thank everyone for their patience and support while the specialist contractor carried out the repairs. It wasn’t a straightforward job due to the history and the size of the lake, but it’s fantastic to see that the works have been a success, and the contractor has done a fantastic job.

“Coatham seafront continues to thrive, with exciting additions in recent years including a mini golf course, Beach Base, and a children’s play park. It’s a vibrant destination that hosts events and welcomes visitors all year round. The Boating Lake serves as a centrepiece for the positive transformation taking place around it. We’re thrilled to see it filled with water once again, ready for the community to enjoy.”
