A parade, ceremony and entertainment has been planned for residents to show their support “shoulder to shoulder” with our armed forces.
The 20th Armed Forces Day will be celebrated on Redcar High Street on Saturday 28 June.
The event will start 10.30am with a parade of military personnel, both past and present, marching along the High Street.
There will then be an official opening ceremony and Raising of the Colours followed by
entertainment throughout the day with musicians, singers, and dancers and military pipes and drums, cadet drill displays. The High Street will have a range of stalls hosted by both military and local civilian charities.
Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, Cllr Ian Hart, said: “This is a chance for everyone in our community to show their appreciation for those who serve both past and present. It will be celebratory and there will be plenty of fun but, of course, there is a very serious side as this is a chance to show how much we care and support our military and our veterans. I would urge everyone to come to Redcar and take part.”
Eric Howden BEM, President of the Redcar branch of the Royal British Legion, said: “It’s not long which we had a tremendous turn out for the commemorations of VE Day which was a special event. However, this is a bit different as it also celebrates all those protecting us right now as well as all those who have served in the past. It’s the 20th anniversary of the event and there’s a brilliant programme of events. It’s a chance for us all to show our pride.”
Cllr Dave Taylor, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council’s Armed Forces Champion, said he hoped everyone in the borough would come together, “shoulder to shoulder” to support our Armed Forces.
He said: “As both a veteran and the Armed Forces Champion for Redcar and Cleveland, I’m proud to mark Armed Forces Day - a day to recognise and thank all those who have served, those still serving, and their families. Our Armed Forces represent the very best of service, sacrifice, and dedication. Whether on operations abroad or supporting communities here at home, they continue to make a real difference.
“It’s also a chance to celebrate the young people coming through our cadet forces. The cadets play a vital role in our communities, developing leadership, confidence, and a strong sense of service they are a credit to themselves and to our area. As a council, we remain committed to supporting our Armed Forces community through the Armed Forces Covenant and beyond. Today, we stand together in gratitude and respect.
“To all who serve past, present, future, and those preparing to - we thank you.”
