Voting at a Polling Station – Voter ID
For the first time in England, all electors who vote at a polling station will require photographic identification in order to vote.
A full list of accepted forms of photo ID will be included on poll cards which will be delivered a number of weeks before elections are held.
The most common forms of acceptable photo ID are:
- Passports
- A drivers licence or provisional drivers licence
- A blue badge
- An Older Person’s or Disabled Person’s Bus Pass
- Any form of Identity Card which bears the Proof of Age Standards Scheme hologram (a PASS card)
These documents do not need to be in date for their original purpose (e.g. an expired passport will be acceptable), but the photograph must still bear a good likeness to the elector. An extensive list of acceptable forms of photographic ID can be found at electoralcommission.org.uk/voterID
Where an elector does not have any acceptable photographic ID, they can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate. The easiest way to apply is online using the government portal (https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate), however the Elections Office are also able to assist – 01642 774774. Applicants must provide personal information to have security checks undertaken, including their full name, date of birth, current address and national insurance number. They must also provide a photograph which will be printed on the VAC. Once verified the certificate will be printed and posted directly to the elector.
Voter ID requirements only apply to electors who vote at a polling station, not to those who have arranged to vote by post. Any elector who does not wish to provide ID in order to vote may apply to vote by post instead.
2024:
- General Parliamentary Election
- Police and Crime Commissioner Election
- Tees Valley Combined Mayoral Election
