Self-build projects
Self-build projects are usually those where you organise the design and construction of your own home directly.
This covers a range of projects including where you build your own dwelling and where you may employ a builder to complete all or part of the project for you.
Community-led projects can also be defined as self build.
Custom housebuilding projects
Custom build homes are where you work with a developer as an individual or a group to help deliver your own home. The developer may help to find a plot, often within a larger housing scheme, manage the construction and arrange the finance for your new home.
This is more of a hands-off approach but your home will be tailored to match your individual requirements.
The self-build and custom housebuilding register
The self-build and custom housebuilding Act 2015 requires us to have a register of people who are interested in self-build or custom build projects in their area.
The register will allow us to understand the demand of self-build and custom build in the borough and to develop a strategy for providing plots to meet this demand.
The register will help us to find out more about the number of plots required in the borough, where people would like these plots to be and the type of houses that people would like to build on them.
We will use the information in the register to find ways in which we might work to identify opportunities for self-build or custom housebuilding.
Registration does not guarantee that a suitable plot will be identified or become available.
