2025 to detect misuse of disabled parking permits.
This initiative was undertaken in partnership with the council’s counter fraud service provider, Veritau, and formed part of a wider regional effort involving City of York Council and Middlesbrough Council to tackle Blue Badge abuse. This activity is linked to a national Blue Badge enforcement initiative happening on 30 May 2025.
Council enforcement officers checked 36 Blue Badges during the operation, focusing on busy parking locations and disabled bays. One case of potential misuse was uncovered and will be subject to appropriate enforcement steps.
The Blue Badge scheme provides essential parking concessions to people with disabilities, helping them access services and maintain independence. Abuse of the scheme—such as using a badge that belongs to someone else or one that is no longer valid—undermines its purpose and unfairly disadvantages genuine users.
Blue Badge misuse is a serious offence and can result in significant consequences, including fines, court proceedings, criminal prosecution.
Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council will continue to monitor and enforce the scheme to as part of our wider commitment to fairness and accessibility in our communities.
