Crowds honour services men and women on Armed Forces Day

Crowds of people came to Redcar today (Saturday 28 June) to honour our service men and women at the 20th Armed Forces Day.

The day started with a parade on the High Street which was followed by a moving ceremony involving prayers, speeches and the Last Post.

There was then entertainment including music, dance and competitions which lasted until late afternoon. It’s thought thousands attended in the course of the day.

Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, Cllr Ian Hart, said it was a chance for everyone to celebrate but also show show much they care and support our military and veterans.

In attendance was Dennis Wears, who is thought have been the oldest veteran at the event and is aged 99. Mr Wears served in the Second World War in the Durham Light Infantry. At the ceremony Eric Howden BEM, told the audience that, “we are honoured that he is with us today.”
