Council competition to name new street sweepers

We are asking the areas younger residents to litter-ally dust off their thinking caps and brush up on their puns to name seven new street sweepers.

If you are 16 years old or under and think you can do better than Dustin Timberlake or Sweeping Beauty, then we want to hear from you.

There is a prize of a £20 book voucher for each of the seven successful submissions and you can send in as many entries as you like.

The competition runs from the 7 November to 5 December with the winners being announced in the New Year. The winning names will be displayed on the side of the new sweepers so residents can look out for them on their grime-busting missions around the borough.

This year the council has bought seven new street sweepers which play an important role in keeping the borough clean and green. Three of the sweepers run on climate-friendly hydrotreated vegetable oil fuel which produces 92% less CO2 emissions than diesel.

Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Housing, Cllr Barry Hunt, explained:

“We want this competition to be a bit of fun for the young people in the area but also use it to help raise awareness of littering and to encourage residents to take pride in their neighbourhoods.

“One of the main reasons streetsweepers are needed is because people continue to drop litter and then the local authority has to clear it up – costing taxpayers’ money. As well as sweeping up litter they keep the streets clean by sweeping up vegetation, waste and stains and grease that appear on pavements and roadsides.

“If we can encourage more people to do their bit and put litter in a bin, or take it home with them, then Redcar and Cleveland could be an even cleaner and greener borough.”
