Hackney carriage and private hire licensing policy

The Hackney carriage and private hire licensing policy sets out the policy that the authority will apply when making decisions about new applications and licences currently in force.

On 20 December 2023, the Council’s Regulatory Committee approved the latest version of our hackney carriage and private hire licensing policy which can be viewed below.

The keys changes to the policy are as follows:

  • Updated layout and formatting to make accessible for people using screen readers
  • Drivers are required to undertake a safeguarding and child sexual exploitation awareness course every three years
  • Additional guidance on driver conduct expectations
  • Update driver conditions
  • Relaxed policy in relation to wheelchair accessible vehicles
  • Additional guidance on DBS checks for drivers, proprietors and operators
  • Additional general guidance to assist applicants and licence holders

The requirement for drivers to undertake a safeguarding and child sexual exploitation awareness course every three years will be actioned when drivers renew their licence.
