Health, safety and welfare in the workplace

The Environmental Health (Commercial) Team are the Health and Safety regulators in certain types of workplaces, but not those regulated by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The types of businesses we regulate include shops and offices, warehouses, hospitality, sports and leisure and consumer services.

Full details can be found in the HSE A-Z Guide to Allocation. This guide also lists which workplaces which are regulated by the HSE, which include factories and construction activities.

What must employers do?

Employers are required to take reasonable steps to protect workers, visitors, and members of the public from unnecessary risks which may cause them harm.

Advice on complying with Health and Safety law is available at HSE: Information about health and safety at work. Business operators can also contact us to request advice on specific requirements.

Employers must report serious workplace accidents, occupational diseases and specified dangerous occurrences (near misses).

Reports should be made online at Reporting of Injuries, Diseases & Dangerous Occurrences RIDDOR (hse.gov.uk).

What we do

We may contact or visit business premises to investigate work related complaints, incidents, and injuries in premises where we have enforcement responsibility or as part of a specific local or national issue.

Not all reported accidents are investigated. It will depend on the nature and severity of the accident, and the circumstances in which it occurred.
