Housing - information for veterans and their families

Housing is a common concern for military personnel. Moving house is a stressful experience, especially for those leaving Service Family Accommodation, or single soldiers who have been serving abroad.

Getting help with housing

If you are a veteran, you can get help to find somewhere to live from your local council. They can give you free advice on housing options, and advice if you are homeless or threatened with homelessness.  

Redcar and Cleveland Council offer support and help whether you're homeless or worried about becoming homeless. We'll give you advice based on your own circumstances.

Tees Valley Homefinder

Social housing is now allocated across Redcar & Cleveland, Middlesbrough and Stockton areas via a Choice Based Lettings system called Tees Valley Homefinder. 

Tees Valley Homefinder is a partnership consisting of 3 local authorities (Redcar & Cleveland, Stockton and Middlesbrough) plus 2 Registered Providers (also known as Housing Associations) Beyond Housing and North Star. 

Properties are also allocated through Nominations with other RPs such as Thirteen, Home Group and Karbon.  

By registering with Tees Valley Homefinder you will have the option to search for available homes and bid for your preferred properties.  People leaving the armed forces community will be given Band 1 priority.

Op Fortitude

Op FORTITUDE is funded by The Armed Forces Covenant Fund to deliver a centralised referral pathway into veteran specific supported housing. 

The remit of the team is to work with individual veterans at risk of or experiencing homelessness, supporting them either with advice and guidance to maintain their current home, or into suitable veterans supported housing. 

The service is designed to help those veterans who do not have a suitable support network already, the network they do have is struggling to support them, or the veteran struggles to engage with local services.  All referrals are requested to make contact with their local authority and report homeless.

Citizens Advice

Citizens Advice has housing information for people leaving the Armed Forces, veterans and their families. You can use their website to find out about organisations that can help you with your housing needs. You can also find out how to speak to a Citizens Advice adviser who may be able to help you.

Defence Transition Service (DTS)

The Defence Transition Services (DTS) team provides information about civilian housing information to service personnel and their dependants, at any time in their career. They also support people during resettlement to help with the transition to civilian life.

Shelter

Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through their advice, support, and legal services.

Stoll

Stoll provides affordable, high-quality housing and support services to enable vulnerable and disabled veterans to lead fulfilling, independent lives.

Haig Housing

Haig Housing provides housing assistance to ex-service people and/or their dependants.

They let general needs homes to the ex-service community at affordable rents, and provide tailored housing solutions to suit the individual needs of severely wounded and disabled veterans. Haig Housing also offers a wide range of housing advice to the service community, and is the strategic housing partner of Help for Heroes.

The Royal British Legion offers advice and information through their phone helpline, online live chat, email, and their website ‘knowledge’ database.
