Redcar and Cleveland Local Governors’ Association grew out of a need for schools to have a forum, not only to discuss relevant educational topics but also be a voice to comment when consulted by the Department for Education (DfE), the local authority or any other organisation.
The Association exists for the following purposes:
- To be an independent, democratic forum for all governing bodies in Redcar and Cleveland.
- To assist governing bodies to further the interests and education of children in Redcar and Cleveland.
- To promote the highest possible standards of school governance.
- To encourage co-operation and the sharing of good practice between schools and governing bodies.
- To further good relationships with the local authority and other relevant agencies.
- To provide a vehicle for expressing collective views of governing bodies and to make appropriate representation at local, regional and national level.
- To promote equality of educational opportunity for all children.
Membership of the Association is made up of nominated representatives from those governing boards of maintained schools and academies who subscribe to the Association.
The majority of schools in Redcar and Cleveland subscribe to the Association and the cost of membership is a nominal, £50 per year.
Meetings are held termly and consist of a presentation and discussion, followed by a short business meeting. Presentations are delivered by invited speakers on relevant, topical, educational subjects. Members aim to identify topics not addressed in other forums or through training sessions.
The presentations often generate valuable discussion and provide an opportunity for sharing experiences, as well as developing an understanding of implications across both primary and secondary schools.
Typically, meetings are held at 6.30p.m on a Monday evening and last no longer than two hours.
The LGA Governance Professional can advise on the schedule of meetings for the remainder of the academic year.
