Home library services

If you are unable to access a library then the home library service will come to you

Books will be delivered to you monthly depending on your preference and there are no fines or overdue charges. You can also ask for specific titles or authors and we will do our best to provide the books you would like to borrow.

If you would like to help a friend or family member who struggles getting out to borrow books and other materials, please talk to the team at your local library or email health-wellbeing-libraries@redcar-cleveland.gov.uk

We also offer a home delivery service for residents that are housebound or are unable to visit their local library.

We can provide a wide range of large print books, if you have difficulty in reading normal print, and spoken word books are available for those with a visual impairment or may have difficulty handling books due to mobility issues.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are unable to visit your local library due to permanent or temporary ill health.
  • You have a permanent disability.
  • You are a carer.
  • You can also sign-up short term for example recovering from an operation, winter months only or at home with a new baby.
  • Any age with SEN
  • Sensory disabilities

Each delivery will take up to 30 minutes so staff can have a meaningful encounter with residents. Not to enter the home unless it is an emergency.

A library officer will then visit you at home or call you. They will:

  • Help you join the library if you are not already a member
  • Discuss authors and genres that you like or dislike
  • Ask if you prefer large print or audio books
  • Put together a detailed reader profile which the library staff will use to choose books that match your interests.

You can borrow any format from the below options:

  • books
  • audiobooks
  • large print
  • jigsaws
  • children’s books
  • Public health information

As a Home Library Service customer, you will also have access to our wide range of online services through BorowBox including:

  • e-books
  • e-audiobooks
  • e-magazines
