  • discretionary funding for Local Authorities to support households who are in need but are not in bands A to D

Frequently asked questions

Q) Will the amount be deducted from my council tax bill?

A) In most cases it will be a payment to you. However, in some cases council tax liability may be reduced if we do not have sufficient information to make a payment.

Q) When will it be paid

A)The majority of payments have now been made to residents on Direct Debit and to those that have provided their bank details. The final set of payments will be processed by 30 June 2022 and should clear bank accounts within 2-3 working days after that.

Q) How do I provide the information

A) We will email or write to you inviting you to provide your information.

An online code will be provided to you and you will need to enter this into an online form together with your council tax account number and your banking details.

You can submit the information using our online portal. (Please note this facility has been temporarily disabled from 23 June 2022 to allow us to finalise all of the claims that we have received so far. We will update this webpage when the facility is available again.)

Q) What will happen if I do not provide information

A) If you choose not to provide information we will reduce your council tax bill by £150 instead.

Q) I want to talk to someone about this

A) We politely ask our residents to try and avoid contacting us if possible as we have thousands of payments to process with limited resource. Dealing with enquiries will slow the payment process.

We know who qualifies for this payment from our council tax records and no eligible resident will lose out.

Q) What will happen if my council tax liability starts after 1 April 2022

A) You will not be eligible for the assistance as it only applies to residents eligible for Council Tax as at 1 April 2022. There is no right of appeal against this. It is a government scheme and these are the rules.

Q) I am not in a Band A-D property and I want to claim from the discretionary fund how do I do this.

A) If you are receiving Council Tax Support and live in a Band E-H property, you will receive a £150 payment. All other Households will receive a £60 payment which will be made direct to bank accounts for Direct Debit payers or as a credit to their council tax account if they do not pay by Direct Debit.

Q) Why do households in band E-H, not on Council Tax Support only receive £60

A)  This is because the Council has limited funds to assist those households and £60 is the amount available after the funding has been allocated equally.
