Redcar and Cleveland's Mayor, Councillor Malcolm Head, who was elected into office on the 25th May, wore the robes for the first time at his official Investiture Ceremony on 1st June.

Cllr Head is looking forward to the year ahead and getting out and about to meet the community.

The Lib Dem Councillor for the West Dyke Ward in Redcar is supported by his wife Sue, who will act as his Mayoress.  They have been married for 50 years and have recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, they have one daughter, Christine and two grandchildren, Ella and Reece.

Cllr Head was brought up in Great Ayton and went to Marwood Church of England School.  He met Susan a Redcar girl and they married in Dormanstown in 1973. 

He worked for two hotel groups travelling around the UK, before finishing in London where he was Regional Director.  After leaving the hotel industry Malcolm was employed as Business Manager representing a major bank in the North East.  He moved back to Redcar in 1996 and has lived there with his family ever since.

Malcolm entered politics when he retired and has been a Councillor since 2019 and was Deputy Mayor last year.

Cllr Head has chosen to support two charities for his year in office:

  • The Junction Foundation, which is a charity based in Redcar supporting children, young people (up to the age of 25) and families with additional challenges. The charity’s vision is a world where no child, young person or family is left to struggle. 
  • Footprints in the Community, which became a charitable organisation in 2013 and provides foodbanks, next step shops etc their aim is to establish a variety of services, to help address isolation and poverty in and around the area and to provide a network of support to local people and organisations.

The Deputy Mayor is the new Labour Councillor for the South Bank Ward, with his wife Sue as Deputy Mayoress.
