Recycling your Christmas items

Information about how to properly recycle Christmas related items such as wrapping paper, real Christmas trees, and cardboard can be found here.

There's always lots of extra waste at Christmas and it can sometimes be confusing about what to do with it.

We have put together the following commonly asked questions about Christmas waste with information about what you can do to make sure it is collected properly.

1. Can Christmas cards and wrapping paper be recycled?
Only cards and wrapping paper with no shiny foil or glitter on can be recycled. You can use the scrunch test on wrapping paper, if you scrunch it and it does not spring back, it can be recycled.

2. How can I dispose of my real Christmas tree?
We are working with Teesside Hospice to support their yearly 'Tree-Cycling' scheme where residents can register to have their real Christmas tree taken away for a small donation.

You can find out more about this on the Teesside Hospice website

3. If I have extra waste/recycling over the Christmas period what can I do with it?
Any extra waste or recycling over the festive period can be taken to Dunsdale Tip

The tip is open every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, make sure you book your appointment before you go.

4. Can I place extra cardboard at the side of the blue bin to be recycled?
All cardboard can be recycled inside your blue bin, flatten your cardboard to save space inside your bin as wet cardboard is difficult to recycle. Therefore, please try to keep all cardboard dry before your collection.

5. Can ivy, mistletoe and holly that I have used to decorate be composted?
Yes, they can be placed into the green garden bin to be composted if they are not covered in glitter.

6. How can I recycle my working radio, when I got a new one for Christmas?
The Household Waste and Recycling Centre are currently running a scheme collecting all small working electronics. The items are then Pat tested and given out to charity groups in the local area.
