To register a death you will need an appointment.
You can make an appointment by calling the Register Office on (01642) 444440.
All appointments need to be attended in person at the Register Office within the Redcar & Cleveland Civic Centre, Ridley Street, Redcar TS10 1TD.
During your appointment, which will take approximately 30 mins, the Registrar will ask you the following questions:
- The date and place the person died
- The full names and surname the deceased was known as and any previous names including a maiden surname
- The date and place of birth of the deceased
- The deceased's occupation/job and whether they were retired or not.
- The deceased's condition or marital status. If the deceased was married, widowed or has or had a civil partner, we will need their full names and surname, their occupation/job and whether they were or are retired.
- The deceased's usual home address
- The full names and surname, relationship to the deceased and home address of the person registering the death
Once the death registration has been completed, the Registrar will assist you with the following:
- The necessary cremation or burial paperwork for your funeral director will be sent directly from the Registrar to your funeral director by email.
- A “Tell Us Once" unique reference number which you can then use to access the online Tell Us Once service which enables you, the next of kin, to provide many government departments with the deceased's details, all at the same time.
- Any certified copies of the death certificate you require. There is a statutory fee of £12.50 for each certificate.
Tell Us Once service
Tell Us Once is a service that lets you report a death to most government organisations in one go.
How this service can help you
When someone dies, their death needs to be registered with the Registrar.
Once that has been done, the Registrar will supply you with a “Tell Us Once unique reference number" which you can then use this to access the online Tell Us Once website which enables you to inform many government departments with the deceased's details, all at the same time.
Here is a short information video explaining the Tell Us Once service, which can be viewed via YouTube.
