Citizenship ceremonies

On behalf of the Home Office, the Register Office in Redcar provides an official citizenship ceremony, which is the final stage in the process of becoming a British citizen.

We are proud to facilitate the ceremony and welcomes all new citizens on behalf of His Majesty King Charles III.

How do I become a British citizen?

For information on becoming a British citizen, please visit Check if you can become a British citizen - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

The citizenship ceremony

Once the Home Office has granted British citizenship, the Register Office in Redcar is notified at the same time as the new citizen.

The Register Office will then contact you directly to invite you to the next group ceremony. Ceremonies take place in the Civic Centre in Redcar and are usually attended by the Mayor (dependent upon availability). You can bring up to four guests to the ceremony.

At the end of the ceremony, you will be provided with your certificate of naturalisation / registration and a souvenir gift of the occasion.

Refreshments are provided after the ceremony and there is opportunity for photographs with the Mayor in the ceremony room.

If you cannot attend the ceremony you have been invited to, you can opt to have a private ceremony, just for yourself and any chosen guests. There is a fee for this ceremony.

If you require any further help or advice, please contact the Register Office, you can find their contact details and schedule at Register Office - what we do and how to find us | Redcar and Cleveland (redcar-cleveland.gov.uk)
