Redcar cemetery memorial wall

Information about the Redcar cemetery memorial wall

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, in partnership with the Friends of Redcar Cemetery, have erected a memorial wall in the new memorial garden within Redcar cemetery.

Polished black granite plaques, 300 mm x 200 mm (12 x 8), with inscriptions (in either gold or silver painted lettering) are available to purchase and are fixed to a space on the wall, which is leased to the purchaser for a period of 10 or 20 years. This lease is renewable at the end of the initial lease period.

Provision will be made for the scattering of cremated remains within the memorial garden thereby allowing Redcar families to scatter the cremated remains of loved ones and commemorate the memory of the deceased all within their local cemetery.

The Friends of Redcar Cemetery Group

In 2005 Ged Fleming, Dot Ahmed and a number of like minded residents rallied together to form the Friends of Redcar Cemetery. In partnership with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council the group have worked together to bring about improvements within Redcar Cemetery.7

The group has raised funding for many projects which have resulted in the replacement of gates and fencing, the repair of stonework and the creation of memorial beds.

They have established a gardening club which meets in the cemetery every Tuesday between 10 am and 12 noon throughout the spring, summer and early autumn and are always happy to welcome new volunteers to help with the various maintenance projects that they undertake.

The Friends produce a quarterly newsletter which is distributed throughout the local communities and they are always willing to make themselves available to give talks to interested local groups.

It is the groups enthusiasm and vision which has resulted in their securing the necessary funding for the erection of the memorial wall within the newly established memorial garden.

Through their partnership with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council they have been able to make significant improvements in the Cemetery and it is hoped that this partnership continues well into the future.
