Sign up for garden waste collections

Information about garden waste collections and how you can sign up for collections can be found here.

Many local authorities, locally and nationally, have made the decision to introduce chargeable garden waste collections amidst rising budget pressures.

Unlike household waste and recycling, there's no legal requirement to collect garden waste so councils can charge for collections. Rather than remove the service, the council has agreed to keep the service for those residents that need and value it.

From April 2024, all garden waste collections will require a subscription to enable a fortnightly collection between April and November each year.

This is an optional service that will cost £40.00 a year for one garden waste bin and £20.00 for each additional bin, up to a maximum of 5, from the subscribing property. If you are a new subscriber and do not currently have a bin, this will need to be purchased separately.

Subscriptions are expected to be opened at the end of January, and further information will be communicated to residents through various channels, including being featured on this web page.

What You Need to Know Before Signing Up

  • The garden waste subscription service is only available to domestic properties. Businesses are not eligible to apply, but can discuss disposal options with our Trade Waste team at TradeWaste@redcar-cleveland.gov.uk
  • Examples of what we collect are:
    • grass and hedge clippings
    • leaves
    • plants and flowers
    • twigs, sticks, and small branches - no bigger than 30 cm in length
    • weeds (but not Japanese Knotweed)
  • If you do not currently have a garden waste bin, this will need to be purchased separately and is not included in the subscription fee.
  • Subscriptions run from April to November each year.
  • This is an opt-in service and therefore, if you do not require a garden waste collection, you do not need to let us know.
  • Garden waste must be presented in a 240L wheeled bin, specifically provided for garden waste collections by the council.
