Temporary event notice

If you wish to hold an ad hoc event for 500 people of less in Redcar and Cleveland, you must give a temporary event notice.

Temporary event notices can be used to authorise the following activities at ad hoc events:

  • The supply of alcohol
  • The provision of regulated entertainment, and
  • The provision of hot food and drink between 11pm and 5am.

You must be 18 years of age or older to give a temporary event notice.

Temporary event notices are subject to the following restrictions per calendar year:

  • An individual can give 5 notices
  • Personal licence holders can give 50 notices
  • The event must involve no more than 499 people
  • The event can cover a period of 168 hours (or 7 days)
  • There must be a minimum of 24 hours between events
  • A single premises can have up to 20 temporary event notices applied for in a calendar year, as long as the total length of the events is not more than 26 days

Giving a temporary event notice

Notices must be submitted at least 10 clear working days before the event.

You can give a late temporary event notice at least 5 clear working days before the event but, if there are objections to the event, the notice will be rejected.

When counting working days, you do not count the day the notice was given or the day of the event.

The term “working day” means any day other than a Saturday, a Sunday, Christmas Day, Good Friday or a day which is a bank holiday under the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 (c. 80) in England and Wales.

If your application is submitted by post, a copy should be sent to the following responsible authorities:

  • Cleveland Police
  • Environmental Protection (Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council)

What happens next

Once your notice has been given correctly, we will acknowledge receipt of the notice and send a copy of it to you.

If the police or the council’s Environmental Protection team are of the view that allowing the event to proceed would undermine a licensing objective, they must notify the premises user and the licensing authority (by way of an objection notice), stating their reasons, no later than 72 hours after receipt of the copy of their notice. The proposed licensable activities may therefore be carried out provided an objection notice is not served.
