School Nursing

School Nurses work aims to improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people.

School Nurses are the lead health professional for the delivery of the Department of Health Healthy Child Programme (HCP) 5 -19 years. The core ambition of this programme is that it results in healthier, happier children and young people who are ready to take advantage of positive opportunities and able to reach their full potential. The HCP is a series of health reviews and screening tests for children and young people as well as information sharing to parent/carer’s to help them give their child the best chance of staying healthy and well. A School Nurse will assess a child / young person’s health needs and offer support, working in p[partnership with other services and  referring to specialist services if required.

In Redcar & Cleveland our School Nursing Teams are located in each of our Family Hubs at Redcar Coast, Saltburn and Ormesby.  Each team consist of School Nurses, who are Specialist Community Public Health Practitioners, School Staff Nurses, who are qualified nurses and School Health Assistants who are responsible for delivering school entry health screening which includes hearing and vision screening, for the National Child Measurement Programmes in reception and school year 6 and delivery of health promotion sessions in schools and with families in their own homes.
