Veterans Gateway​

Veterans Gateway is the first point of contact for veterans seeking support.

Veterans Gateway is made up of a consortium of organisations and Armed Forces charities, including The Royal British Legion, SSAFA the Armed Forces charity, Poppyscotland, Combat Stress and Connect Assist.

Blind Veterans UK 
Blind Veterans UK help blind ex-Service men and women lead independent and fulfilling lives, by supporting them with their in-depth expertise, experience and full range of services.

Blesma, The Limbless Veterans, is dedicated to assisting serving and ex-Service men and women who have suffered life-changing limb loss or the use of a limb, an eye or loss of sight in the honourable service of our country.

Career Transition Partnership (CTP) 
Training courses, recruitment and career advice to service leavers undergoing resettlement.

Civvy Street

Combat Stress 
Combat Stress is the UK's leading Veterans' mental health charity.
Mental ill-health affects ex-Service men and women of all ages. Right now, Combat Stress support over 5,900 Veterans aged from 19 to 97. They are a vital lifeline for these men and women, and their families.

Finchale College 
Specialist training college which hosts a veterans support network and produces a Directory of Services. Finchale was founded in 1943 as a rehabilitation and resettlement centre for disabled servicemen.

FirstLight Trust is a charity for veterans, veterans-to-be and those going through transition.

Forward Assist (Veteran Support Charity) 
Forward Assist Veteran Support Charity provides advice, information and guidance, 'life changing' projects and opportunities to former servicemen and women who are experiencing difficulties in adjusting to a new life as a civilian.
Forward Assist's programmes are particularly relevant for former servicemen and women who are experiencing homelessness or housing problems, are incarcerated in Prison or have involvement with the Criminal Justice System.

Jobcentre Plus 
Jobcentre Plus is a government-funded employment agency and social security office that can be found in most cities, whose aim it is to help people of working age find employment in the UK.
It was formed when the Employment Service merged with the Benefits Agency and was renamed Jobcentre Plus in 2002. It is a part of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

Whether you are experiencing mental health problems or going through a difficult time in your life, Mind can help.
Mind aims to help you live the best life you can, whatever challenges you face. They do this by offering informal one to one counselling.

The Royal British Legion (RBL) 
The Royal British Legion (RBL) provides practical care, advice and support to serving members of the Armed Forces, veterans of all ages and their families. The RBL run the Poppy Calls Handy Person Service which provides a service for small household repairs and minor adaptations around the home.

Saltburn WellBeing Centre Veterans Counselling Service
A counselling service for military veterans residing at Hardwick House, Riverside Care and Support's supported housing project for veterans located in Middlesbrough, or elsewhere in the Tees Valley and their partners, who are struggling and need support.

The Service Personnel and Veterans Agency is responsible for pay and pensions provision

Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) Forces Help 
Provides financial, practical and emotional assistance to anyone that is currently serving or has ever served in the Army, Navy or RAF, and their families. The local branch can be found at the SSAFA Forces Help, Army Reserves Centre, Stockton Road, Middlesbrough, TS5 4AD. Contact (01642) 217440 or

Veterans UK 
Help and support for veterans from the Ministry of Defence.

Health services 
The Veterans Wellbeing Assessment and Liaison Service (VWALS) provides outreach and assessment workers and utilises existing community, primary and secondary care mental health services across the North East.
The aim of the service is to provide a prompt, effective assessment, liaison and signposting service for military veterans and their families across the region. 
VWALS work in partnership with Combat Stress and the Royal British Legion.

The local mental health trust (Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Trust) has a dedicated, nationally recognised Community Veterans Mental Health Service which provides tailored support for those who have left the Forces. There is also a Veterans Wellbeing Group in order to provide information and guidance for interested local veterans.
