Recycling Facts and Figures

We spend £2.6 million on waste disposal every year - with this we could resurface around 19 miles of roads! The more we recycle the less we would have to spend on waste disposal. Always make sure to Check It Before You Chuck It!

Paper Recycling

By recycling 1 ton of paper we save:
  • 17 trees
  • 7,000 gallons of water
  • 463 gallons of oil
  • 3 cubic yards of landfill space
  • Enough energy to heat an average home for 6 months
  • Recycled paper produces 73% less air pollution than if it was made from raw materials.

It takes 24 trees to make 1 ton of newspaper.
12.5 million tonnes of paper and cardboard are used annually in the UK.
Recycled paper produces 73% less air pollution than if it was made from raw materials.
The average household throws away 13,000 separate pieces of paper each year.
We collected around 2899.83 tonnes of paper last year.

Steel Recycling
Recycling 1 ton of steel saves:
  • 2,500 pounds of iron ore
  • 1,400 pounds of coal
  • 120 pounds of limestone

Aluminium and Steel Cans Recycling
  • If all cans in the UK we're recycled we would need 14 million fewer dustbins.
  • Recycling just one aluminium can saves enough energy to keep a 100-watt light bulb burning for almost four hours or your television running for three hours.
  • 350,00 aluminium cans are produced every minute.
  • Once an aluminium can is recycled can be part of a new can within six weeks.
  • There is no limit on the amount of times that aluminium can be recycled.

During the time is takes you to read this sentence about 50,000 aluminium will have been made.

Glass Recycling
The energy saved for recycling one glass bottle will:
  • Power a 100 watt light bulb for almost an hour
  • Power a computer for 25 minutes
  • Power a TV for 20 minutes
  • Power a washing machine for 10 minutes
  • Each UK family uses an average of 500 glass bottles and jars annually
Plastic Recycling
The energy conserved by recycling just one plastic bottle will:
  • Light a 60-watt light bulb for 6 hours
  • Power a computer for 25 minutes
  • Around 18 plastic bottles make 1 Nike football kit

Producing new plastic from recycled material uses only two-thirds of the energy required to manufacture it from raw materials, meaning we can save a whole lot of energy by recycling plastic.

We collected around 962.551 tones of plastic in the last year.
