What is Routes to Employment?

Routes to Employment (formerly Connexions) offers independent careers information, advice and guidance to young people aged 13-19 or up to 25 for people with learning difficulty or disability. If you have any queries please contact the main office on 01642 444666 during office hours or email

We have three distinct teams who each focus on increasing the numbers of Redcar & Cleveland residents who are in employment, education or training.

School and College Team
This team works in schools and colleges giving impartial advice, helping young people to make informed choices about what they want to do when they leave school or college.

Young peoples NEET Intervention Team
This team offers independent careers information, advice and guidance to young people aged 16-19 or up to 25 for people with learning difficulty or disability who are not already in Training, Education or Employment.

Routes 2 Employment Team
This team works to:

  • Help to create apprenticeships with local employers by providing small funding packages and offering recruitment support
  • Source appropriate vocational training for local apprenticeship schemes
  • Facilitate recruitment & selection for jobs for Redcar & Cleveland employers
  • Remove any final barriers to employment for Redcar & Cleveland residents e.g. initial transport costs

Gateway offers dual Education Services in Alternative Provision to pupils in Redcar & Cleveland 14-16, as well as a Study Program and Traineeship Programme for Post 16 Learners.

The Centre offers Maths and English Qualifications to students who did not achieve a 4 grade (old C grade) at GCSE in tandem with the Employability Certificate. Learners also complete a work placement as part of this qualification.

Gateway offers entry-level qualifications as well as Functional Skills Qualifications in Maths and English, depending on a learners ability and skill. All learners are provided with an ILP to assist with the one-to-one learning programmes on offer at Gateway.

All our learners work towards improving personal and social development skills, aiming to reduce any barriers they may have towards learning. For Year 11 learners, we offer courses to improve employability skills and also offer a range of vocational courses.

Foundation for Jobs
Created by Redcar & Cleveland Foundation for Jobs (FFJ), the Young Peoples Entitlement is an agreement between secondary schools and local businesses to do more to help improve the number of pupils finding work at the end of their time in education.

Its aim is to give all 11-to-16-year-olds in the borough a much more effective preparation for the world of work and increase their access to the workplace. It also aims to provide better opportunities for them to meet with, and get support from, employers in order to improve their employability skills and work readiness and enhance their future job prospects.
