The Emergency Duty Service

Help outside of office hours

What kind of service is provided?
The Emergency Duty Service provides an out-of-hours response to emergency situations involving child protection, child care, mental health and other adult care matters. We provide advice and where necessary, immediate service to people/families who are experiencing crisis in their lives. We work closely with other emergency services including Health, Warden Call, Police, Women Refuges and the Benefits Agency.

What areas does the service cover?
We cover the Boroughs of:
Darlington
Hartlepool
Middlesbrough
Redcar & Cleveland
Stockton-on-Tees

When we can be contacted?
We are available week days from 5.00 p.m. to 8.30 a.m. the following morning. At weekends and on Public Holidays, a 24 hour emergency service is provided. We can be contacted whenever your local Social Care office is closed.

How to contact us?
We can be contacted by telephone 08702 402994 or by minicom (01642) 602346 and have trained interpreters if required.

What happens when you call?
You will be asked to give your name and telephone number so a Social Worker can call you back. Usually this will be within a few minutes, but if they are all busy on other emergencies, you will be called back as soon as someone is free. The Social Workers have mobile phones for when they are out of their office. You will not be asked to give any personal details until a Social Worker calls you.

Can you contact us if you already have a social worker?
Yes, if you are experiencing a crisis which will not wait until the office is open, you can contact us.

Can the Social worker visit on a regular basis?
No, an Emergency Duty Social Worker is only able to respond to an immediate crisis. Following this, if you need ongoing help or support, they can pass a request on for further assistance.

Is this service confidential?
Yes, we are bound by the same rules as day time staff. We pass on details of your contact to us, sometimes with a recommendation that we contact you.

What if I am not satisfied with the Emergency Duty Service?
Stockton Social Care run the support service on behalf of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council. You can make a comment, compliment or complaint about the service by selecting Stockton or Redcar and Cleveland.
