Report An Empty Home

The Council relies on a number of sources of information to identify empty homes across the borough such as Council Tax, Housing Benefit and district surveys however there may well be empty homes that we are unaware of. There is no substitute for local knowledge. Local people are more likely to be aware of comings and goings within their area. If you live near an empty home, there are some points you may wish to consider:
  • An empty home could provide much need accommodation for a family in housing need
  • The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors estimates that properties adjoining poorly maintained empty homes can be devalued by as much as 18%
  • An empty home can be a magnet for anti-social behaviour and fear of crime
  • An empty home has a negative visual impact on the surrounding area
In addition, long term empty homes can affect communities in that:
  • They impact upon schools, health care, transport provision and other valuable local services as the population reduces
  • Reducing spending in an area can impact upon local business and industry.
Anyone unfortunate enough to have lived next door to a property that has been left empty for a long period of time will understand the frustration and misery such a situation can create. If you live near or know of an empty home, please contact us using the Report an Empty Home form or telephone the Empty Homes Hotline (01287) 612300 (24 hour answering machine)
