SPECIALIST drilling machinery has returned to the site of the new leisure, business support and community facility in Redcar to create the foundations for the basement of the building.

The 80 tonne piling rig will be on site for the next month and drill the equivalent of 2,800 metres of piles into the ground.

And when complete the work will create the foundations which will support the new £31m development.

Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism, Councillor Olwyn Peters said:

"The new leisure, business support and community facility in the heart of Redcar will create first class facilities for our residents and visitors to the town.

This is such an exciting time for the area as our ambitious regeneration plans really start to take shape."

The development will include:
  • a 6 lane, 25 metre swimming pool, training and leisure pool
  • dance hall and performance space
  • fitness suite and junior gym
  • sports hall
  • business space for small to medium sized enterprises
  • flexible community facilities including a debating chamber and relocated register services
  • improved and additional car parking
  • landscaped public spaces.
Glyn Jones, Willmott Dixon's construction lead added: "We are really proud to be working in partnership with the Council on this prestigious project. It will create a real focus for all the fantastic work currently taking place in the area."

A fly through of the scheme is available to view at www.redcar-cleveland.gov.uk/regeneration and a model of the development is on show at the Redcar Regeneration Centre on the Esplanade next to Pacittos Ice Cream parlour in Redcar.
