SALTBURN HILL CLIMB - CANCELLED

Another successful Saltburn Hill Climb, organised by Middlesbrough and District Motor Club, was held in September 2012. This years event was unfortunately cancelled due to the forecast. The Motor Club have decided not to reschedule it for this year but hope to be back in 2014.

OLYMPIC TORCH

The Olympic Torch came through Marske and Saltburn on Monday 18th June. It was a beautiful day and many people turned out to see it. John Pearson from Saltburn was one of the torch bearers in Saltburn. Photos are shown, including one of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council staff and Tracy Meadows the Clerk of the Parish Council, standing with John Pearson after the event. The other photo is of John whilst carrying it through Saltburn.






Chairman

Our new Parish Chairman is Councillor Malcolm Graham. The photograph shows Councillor Graham with the outgoing Chairman Mr Paul Smith. The other photograph shows Councillor Graham and our new Vice Chairman Councillor Norah Cooney.





Sponsorship

The Parish Council sponsors many events in the Parish, as follows:

'Saltburn in Bloom'


Saltburn regularly wins awards in the Northumbria in Bloom and Britain in Bloom competitions. It is organised by the Saltburn '500 Club in association with town businesses, organisations and local councils, and sponsored by the Parish Council. £3,000 was awarded this year by the Parish Council.

A visit to see the floral displays at anytime in the Spring and Summer is worthwhile.

'Marske in Bloom' and 'New Marske in Bloom'

Marske has received £2,200 and New Marske £1500 towards their 'In Bloom' efforts this year.

The following Northumbria in Bloom awards were awarded within the Parish in 2013:

Saltburn - Best coastal resort - Gold medal
Saltburn Railway Station - Best railway or bus station - Gold and trophy winner
Saltburn Library - Best volunteer project - Gold and trophy winner
Laurieston Care Home, Saltburn - Best care/residential/convalescent home Gold
Saltburn Valley Gardens - Best park - Gold
Saltburn Primary School - Growing Together award for Schools - Gold

16th Saltburn International Festival of Folk Music, Dance and Song, August 2013

This year's event was organised by Saltburn Folk Festival and the Parish Council are one of the main sponsors of this event. It was held between 9th and 11th August 2013. For any further details please contact the Festival Organiser, details below, or have a look at their website.

Winkies Castle


This is a museum which is in one of the oldest cottages in Marske and it takes you through the history and heritage of Marske by the Sea. The Parish Council is one of the main sponsors of the museum.

This years event was be held on Saturday 13th July at Emmanuel Church, Saltburn. For details of the event please contact 01287 622443.


Former "Heritage" Week


The Parish Council still sponsors those organisations which want to continue staging events in what used to be known as Victorian or Heritage Week, usually during the week straight after the Folk Festival, and includes the following:

  • Saltburn Bowls Club, Heritage Bowls night
  • Saltburn Community & Arts Association Annual Art Exhibition
  • Saltburn Community & Arts Association theatre production
  • Barrel organist playing on Milton Street

Christmas Celebrations in Saltburn, Marske & New Marske

As usual Saltburn, Marske & New Marske Parish Council supply Christmas trees for the three townships within the Parish and events are held for switching on the lights.

New Marske lights will be switched on on Friday 29th November 2013 - The parade starts at the Working Men's Club at 5pm and proceeds to the Gleneagles Centre where Father Christmas will meet the children and there will be childrens entertainment.

Saltburn lights will be switched on on Saturday 30th November 2013 - Father Christmas will arrive on the sleigh at the Christmas tree at 5pm and the lights will be switched on by the competition winners. Events will be held in Saltburn throughout the afternoon including face painting in the library from 2.30 - 4.30 and Clown and Circus Skills Show in the Community Centre from 2.30 - 4.30.

Marske lights will be switched on on Thursday 5th December 2013 - The parade will commence at Marske Hall at 6.30pm and proceed to his grotto in the Guide Hall. There will be stalls in Marske Leisure Centre from 3pm and music in Marske Square from Marske Fishermens Choir.
