Apply for Student Discount
To apply for a Student exemption please visit our online Council Tax options system.
Please select ‘View Council Tax reduction services’ then ‘Apply for a reduction if you are a student or have a student living with you’.
Households where everyone’s a full-time student don’t have to pay Council Tax.
To count as a full-time student, your course must:
- last at least 1 year
- involve at least 21 hours study per week
If you study for a qualification up to A level and you’re under 20, you qualify for a discount if your course:
- lasts at least 3 months
- involves at least 12 hours study per week
You’ll need to provide a certificate of exemption from your school, college or university.
Council Tax still has to be paid if there’s someone in your household who’s not a full-time student. The household will get a 25% discount if there is only one adult who is not a student living there.
