Food Hygiene and Food Standards
The team is responsible for the enforcement of Food Hygiene and Food Standards regulations. This work includes routine inspections, investigation of complaints and enforcement action where necessary.
The Council operates the Food Standard Agency's Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. Information on how the scheme works, and to search for ratings in our area please visit the FSA website.
Starting a Food Business
Before starting your new food business you will need to register with us at least 28 days before opening. Registration applies to most types of food business, including catering businesses run from home and mobile or temporary premises, such as stalls and vans. If you have more than one business you will need to register all of them.

If you store or handle products of animal origin, like meat, and you supply to other food businesses, you might need to be approved. Please contact us to discuss whether approval will be required.
Should you have any complaints about the hygiene conditions of a food business in the area or food that you have purchased then please do not hesitate to contact us on the number or email address below. Alternatively, you can submit your complaint through the Food Standard Agency's website. All complaints are dealt with in the strictest confidence.

If you are a food business and want to improve your food hygiene rating contact us to discuss your options. We offer a free re-rating for businesses who are willing to wait the stand still period of 3 months from their last inspection and who haven't already had a re-rating since their last inspection. Alternatively, if you want to skip the stand still period, or have already had a re-rating inspection since your last programmed inspection, you can apply and pay a fee of £150.00.
