He attended West Dyke Junior School and James Mackinlay Secondary Modern in the town and after leaving school in 1966 he worked as a telegram boy for the Post Office.  In 1968 he joined the Army, spending 10 years in the Royal Engineers.   On returning to Redcar he worked at BSC as a mobile tool operator and in the Redcar Coke ovens, before returning to work at Royal Mail in 1981 in sorting offices throughout the area.

After being trained as a shoe repairer by his brother Bryan, he opened a shop in Redcar in 1992 and then opened a Cobblers in Marske in 1994 and worked there until retirement in 2016.

Cllr Wells is a widower, his wife of 46 years Davina passed away in 2016.  He has three children Bryan, Nicola and Toni, three grand-children, Lauren, Lewis and Olivia and one great grandson Jack and a great granddaughter on the way.

Cllr Wells is the founder member of Dormanstown Junior Football Club and a Trustee of Newcomen Community Residents Association.

His chosen charities for his year in office are Zoe’s Place Children’s Hospice, based in Normanby and EVA Women’s Aid, based in Redcar.  He decided to support these two charities “because they are both fantastic charities who do so much for the local community, in these difficult times they are in great need of help and financial support and hopefully I can raise as much money as possible for both the charities”.

The Deputy Mayor is the Lib Dem Councillor for the Ormesby Ward, Councillor Carole Morgan, with her son Matthew acting as Consort.
