Countdown to the opening of Redcar and Cleveland Leisure and Community Heart

The countdown has started for the opening of the new £31m Redcar & Cleveland Leisure and Community Heart.

Opening on Saturday 26 April, this exciting and vibrant new facility for the borough is situated in the heart of Redcar town centre, near to the town's railway station.

This eagerly awaited development will provide a focal point for local communities and visitors and include swimming pools, a wave simulator, register office, fitness suites and conference facilities.

Redcar & Cleveland Leisure and Community Heart will also be home to the borough's new council chamber, which will also double up as a multi-purpose space that can be used for community activities.

The mayor's parlour, accommodation for small and medium sized businesses and retail space will also be located at the Ridley Street site.

Councillor Mark Hannon, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, said:

"As an integral part of the regeneration of the borough, I have really enjoyed watching this development take shape.

"As well as supporting local industry, the construction of this multi million pound scheme has had a massive impact on the economy, exceeding its targets for spending and employing locally.

"This impact is set to continue once the new facility opens by creating and safeguarding over 260 jobs in day to day operations.

"We are also committed to supporting business growth in the borough and the new business centre will offer space for people who wish to develop business ideas a catalyst for the creation of new companies and job opportunities."

Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism, Councillor Olwyn Peters, added:

"This fantastic first class facility in the heart of Redcar is just one of the exciting regeneration projects that has breathed new life into this seaside town.

"There aren't many places where you can get fit, have fun, learn to flow ride, grab a coffee, do business and even get married and thats what so unique about this impressive complex.

"This £31m centre also provides a lasting legacy to the 2012 Olympic games which 'inspired a generation' and reflects our grand vision and commitment to improving our health and sports offer across the borough."

Redcar & Cleveland Leisure and Community Heart opens on Saturday April 26 from 9.30am to 4.30pm with some fantastic leisure and sporting activities taking place throughout the day.

Martin Miles, Contract Manager for Everyone Active, said:

"The opening event that is being planned for this fantastic facility will see Olympic stars, European and British champions mixing with the general public on a day when all our activities will be completely free of charge.

"This really will be a wonderful leisure centre for everyone to enjoy and the facilities will be second to none in the area."
