Eco SchoolWheatlands Eco Action Group
Our school was awarded Green Flag status in July 2007. Our Eco Action Group meet each week to discuss environmental issues in and out of school.
The group is run by the children who plan the activities and take full responsibility for various roles around school.
We receive funding from Friends of Wheatlands towards our various project and fundraise at school events on occasion. We have been involved in projects such as building bird and bug boxes, plus developing a log pile to make a minibeast habitat.
The children also look after many plants around school, which involves taking care of over 40 tubs of flowers and over 20 spider plants. We are hoping to get larger tubs this year that are more permanent.
Recycling paper is strongly promoted within school; each class has a paper recycle bin which Eco Action Group members collect each week.
Staff and children are encouraged to save energy and water within school. A picture of our Eco mascot Billy Bottletop can be seen near to light switches and taps, reminding children not to waste water or energy. The children also collect used stamps which are sold to make money to help sick and injured hedgehogs. The Eco Action Group group is supported by committed staff and encourages children within the group to adopt a responsible attitude towards the care of our school and planet, with the aim of promoting these positive values within the wider school community.
