The Bowes Museum

Following a £12million revamp, The Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle is a super
place for a family outing, whatever your age and whatever the weather! Our
friendly staff will welcome you to fresh new galleries, displayed in both
contemporary and traditional ways, events and exhibitions.

The Museum is full of fascinating and interesting exhibits, the most famous of
which is the Silver Swan. The swan, which was created over 200 years ago, is a
life-size musical automation which delights audiences with its daily
performance.

Built in the 19th century in the style of a French chateau, The Bowes Museum
now boasts a fabulous Fashion & Textile Gallery, Silver & Metals Gallery, and a
trio of amazing Picture Galleries. The latter are among the largest gallery
spaces in the UK and house the Museum's finest paintings.

The revamp also included a new education suite, with staff offering a wide
range of entertaining and informative activities and family fun days.

Surrounding the museum are beautiful gardens and acres of parkland , with room
to just stroll, picnic or be a little more energetic with one of our Bags of
Fun, available from reception for a refundable deposit. The grounds also
contain an outdoor Story Garden, with guest storytellers telling amazing tales
during the peak months.

Whether rain or sun, it's fun, fun, fun at the Bowes Museum!
