Arranging a funeral
Once the death has been registered, a funeral can be either by burial or by cremation. You can organise this with or without the help of a funeral director, and personalise it as much as you wish. In some cases the deceased may have planned their own funeral in advance. Go to Direct Gov for guidance on making arrangements.

Paying for a funeral
If you arrange a funeral, you will be responsible for paying the bill, so first check where the money will come from and that there will be enough.

If you or your partner are getting a low income benefit and need help towards the cost of a funeral, you may be able to get financial support. Direct Gov and Jobcentre Plus provides more information.

No friends or family identified?
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council is responsible for making funeral arrangements for anybody who dies within their boundary if:
  • no funeral arrangements have been made
  • no relatives of the deceased can be found, or
  • the relatives of the deceased cannot or will not arrange a funeral.
This responsibility is placed on the Council by Section 46 of the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984. The Act also states that the Council may recover all their costs incurred in making the funeral arrangements from the estate (property and possessions) of the deceased.

If the person in question died outside of the Redcar and Cleveland boundary, the funeral arrangements will be the responsibility of the local authority where they died, even if they had lived in Redcar and Cleveland.

If funeral arrangements have already been made, or the funeral has already taken place, the Council will not be able to get involved. We cannot provide any funding for funeral arrangements to families, whether the funeral has taken place or not.

A funeral arranged by the Council is called a Public Health Funeral.
