The School Nursing Team aims to work with children, young people and their families to enable them to play an active role in making healthy life choices. We want to support children and young people to reach their full potential. School nurses assess child and family health needs and offer universal services in line with the healthy child programme (HCP) to all families in Redcar and Cleveland. The healthy child programme is a series of reviews, screening tests and vaccinations for children and young people as well as information to parents to help them give their child the best chance of staying healthy and well. School nurses are specialist public health practitioners who deliver evidence based interventions to improve health and social outcomes for children aged five to 19 years and their families,  referring to other professionals as appropriate.

School Nurses take an active role in representing health in accordance with the local Child Safeguarding Board Policies and Procedures, supporting vulnerable children and young people.

All children will be offered health screening during their first year at school. When a child starts full time education that is when their care passes from the health visiting service to the school nursing service.

Children in reception and year 6 will receive a letter about the programme and information how to opt out of the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP).

The summer term before your child starts full time school you will receive a health questionnaire to complete and return. School nurses can support families with a wide variety of issues.

School Nurses provide advice and support to parent, children, young people and schools in response to any health concerns. This support can be given via telephone, within a school setting or home visits. If you have a concern about your childs health that you would like to discuss with a school nurse please contact the team by telephone on 01642 444011 or complete a referral form which are available at school reception offices.  Referrals can be made by professionals. However all referrals must be discussed with the child/young person, parent/carer in advance in order to gain consent to refer. All of our staff are required to abide by a strict code of conduct on confidentiality. We will only share information with those who need to know in order to provide good quality care. Occasionally there may be exceptions to this, for example to support a clinical audit or to monitor the quality of care provided. We will usually discuss this with you beforehand.
