Warm & Well case study

Stewart Way, of Beverley Road, Redcar, was referred to Redcar & Cleveland Councils Warm & Well service by Carers Together. Stewart, cares for his wife, Susan, who suffers from epilepsy, diabetes, and arthritis and he has also recently been diagnosed himself with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Before her illness Susan worked as a classroom assistant teaching children with special needs, and Stewart had to give up his job as a legal cashier to look after her.

When we contacted Stewart his wife was in hospital and he was worried about her coming home because the heating wasnt working. Although Stewart and Susan didn't fit the criteria for a government grant, because of their health problems and low income, Warm & Well were able to access some funding from the Public Health team so that a new heating system could be installed.

The Warm and Well team also helped Stewart and Susan switch energy suppliers saving them £147 a year and they were registered for Warm Home Discount that will give them £135 off their winter electricity bill. Their new fixed price plan means they will not need to worry about price increases for the next two winters and the switching site will also give them £40 cash-back.

Stewart said, We cant thank you enough, we didnt even know this service existed and you have done so much, its wonderful!.

Warm and Well can offer help with emergency heating, accessing grants for heating repairs and replacements for eligible residents, loft and cavity wall insulation, switching energy suppliers and energy efficiency advice.
