What is Healthwatch Redcar and Cleveland?

Healthwatch Redcar and Cleveland is the independent consumer champion for patients, carers and all those using health and social care services. Its role is to engage with local people, patients, social care service users and their carers to collect views and feedback and use this information to help shape local services.

Healthwatch Redcar & Cleveland play an important part in improving health and social care services in the Borough.

Why do we need Healthwatch Redcar and Cleveland?

This is our response to the Health and Social Care Act 2012 which seeks to ensure patients and the public are at the heart of everything our health and social care services do. We have a statutory duty to have a local Healthwatch which has been established in our area since April 2013.

Healthwatch Redcar and Cleveland is required to:

  • Provide information and advice to the public about accessing health and social care services and choice in relation to aspects of those services
  • Promote and support the involvement of people in the monitoring, commissioning and provision of local care services
  • Obtain the views of people about their needs for and experience of local care services and make those views known to those involved in the commissioning, provision and scrutiny of care services
  • Make reports and make recommendations about how those services could or should be improved
  • Make the views and experiences of people known to Healthwatch England helping it to carry out its role as national champion
  • Make recommendations to Healthwatch England to advise the Care Quality Commission to carry out special reviews or investigations into areas of concern
What is Healthwatch England?

Healthwatch England is a national body that enables the collective views of the people who use NHS and social care services to influence national policy, advice and guidance. It is a statutory committee of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) with a Chair who is a non-executive director of the CQC.

Healthwatch England provides leadership, guidance and support to all local Healthwatches.

Healthwatch England is able to escalate concerns raised by Healthwatch Redcar and Cleveland about health and social care services directly to CQC and, through them, ultimately to the Secretary of State.
