The Teesside Area is world renowned for its expertise within the Petro- Chemical industry. However with the skills, technology, economic and other benefits also come the potential for accidents.

The Control of Major Accident Hazard Regulations (2015), COMAH overseen by a Competent Authority comprising the Environment Agency and the Health and Safety Executive ensure that those sites with large stores of potentially harmful chemicals identify what the major hazards are and prepare emergency plans in the event that they occur.

It should be stressed that the occurrence of a worse case COMAH scenario is considered very unlikely. Despite this the sites in conjunction with the emergency services and other agencies regularly exercise.

In addition they prepare an internal emergency response plan, the local authority and emergency services prepare an external emergency response plan.

The sites designated as (Upper Tier) COMAH sites in the Borough of Redcar & Cleveland are:
  • BOC, Teesport
  • Sabic UK Petrochemicals, Teesport
  • Sahaviriya Steel Industries (SSI), Redcar Huntsman Polyurethanes, Wilton International Ensus, Wilton International Sabic UK Petrochemicals, Wilton International As part of the planning process the competent authority identify a Public Information Zone (PIZ). As well as having to undergo additional planning consent. If you are resident within the PIZ you will receive information on the site and what to do during an emergency
