Access to Information for School Governors

Since the current government came into power, the following former information sources for governors have been discontinued:
  • GovernorNet web-site (which was specifically for school governors and provided regular updates on educational and governance issues)
  • Guide to the Law for School Governors CD ROM
  • National Governors magazine.
  • Teachers TV (which included short videos relevant to governance and other areas of school life)
The School Governor Support Service wants to ensure that governors are aware of where they can now access information and further details are given below.

Department for Education (DfE) Web-site

The DfE web-site (www.education.gov.uk) is now the main source of online government information for all those involved in schools. It incorporates some of the content previously held separately in the GovernorNet and TeacherNet websites. Governors might be particularly interested in the following:
  • General educational updates on the Home page under areas such as In the news and Hot Topics.
  • Consultations under the Recommended heading on the Home page. Governors can see a range of consultations on government proposals and respond with their views.
  • School and College Performance Tables under the Research and Statistics heading on the Home page. The performance tables allow governors to compare their schools performance with that of other schools in the local authority and nationally. There are also spending tables which can be used for financial benchmarking.
  • Leadership and Governance under the Schools heading on the Home page. Click on Leadership and Governance then Governance to access the information specifically aimed at school governors. This includes the Guide to the Law for School Governors and other useful information on governors roles and responsibilities.

SchoolsWorld the new Teachers TV
Government funding for Teachers TV was withdrawn. Ten Alps, the company largely responsible for Teachers TV, has negotiated a non exclusive agreement with the DfE to broadcast the entire back-catalogue of Teachers TV videos on a new website service, SchoolsWorld , launched on 11 May.

Videos can be accessed at www.schoolsworld.tv/videos. For videos specifically targeted at school governors click on Roles on the left hand side of the Home page then Governor. A range of short videos on a number of topics will be displayed, but if you cant see what youre interested in click on More Just for Governors videos for a wider selection.

Modern Governor
Members of governing bodies subscribing to Modern Governor are reminded that this e-learning facility is available to them at www.moderngovernor.com. Three new modules recently added to the existing 18 modules are School Governors and Social Media, Admissions and Discipline 2011 and Governance of a Church School.

Information from the Local Authority
The local authority continues to provide information through its comprehensive training and development programme, termly Consultation Meetings for Head Teachers, Chairs and Vice-Chairs and occasional papers for the agendas of governing body meetings. As the termly newsletter is limited in space and tends to focus on highlighting or sharing good practice, the Manager of Governor Services has started using e-mail more frequently to send information on key developments to chairs of governors or other nominated e-mail contacts within governing bodies. Governors can also access advice from the School Governor Support Service by contacting the Clerk to their Governing Body (See Contact the Team and contact details can also be found on the membership list regularly circulated with meeting papers) or the Manager of Governor Services on 01642 837755 or at glennis_smith@redcar-cleveland.gov.uk.

National Governors' Association
The National Governors' Association (NGA) is the only independent organisation that represents school governors in England. Their aim is to improve the well-being of children and young people by promoting high standards in all schools, and improving the effectiveness of their governing bodies. Certain information can be accessed by any governor on their web-site at www.nga.org.uk. To receive most benefit from the services of the NGA, including free places on conferences and events, a magazine 6 times a year and weekly e-mail updates, governing bodies or individual governors may wish to consider becoming members. The normal cost of standard membership for a governing body is £70 per year, but there is a slight saving for
governing bodies subscribing through the School Governor Support Service. Membership of NGA is included as an additional optional item in the service level agreement for 2013/2014. Details of packages and charges for 2013/14 are given via the link below.
