Your postal votes counted in the Euro election with a 38.9 per cent turnout and 40,362 valid votes across the borough.

It was the highest of the four Teesside boroughs and nearly double Redcar & Clevelands 1999 Euro turn-out. In Hartlepool, it was 37.89, Stockton 35.15 and Middlesbrough 32.25 and regionally, there was a 42.5 per cent turnout.

1,490 votes were rejected mainly because the declaration of identity was either missing or incomplete.

Voters will again be posting votes in October for the referendum for the Northern Regional Assembly.

Heres the boroughs voting breakdown, with the regional totals and percentage share of the vote in brackets:
  • Labour 12,092 (266,057 34.1%)
  • Conservative 9,694 (144,969 18.6%)
  • Liberal Democrats 5,910 (138,791 17.8%)
  • UK Independence Party 5,470 (94,887 12.2%)
  • British National Party 3,699 (50,249 6.4%)
  • Green Party 1,991 (37,247 4.8%)
  • Neil Herron Independent 723 (39,658 5.1%)
  • Respect The Unity Coalition 373 (8,633 1.1%)

  • Fiona Hall (Lib Dem)
