Helping You to Find Childcare in
Redcar & Cleveland

What is the Families' Information Service (FIS)?
The FIS provides a free childcare information service facilitated by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council. We can help parents and carers to find registered and unregistered childcare throughout Redcar & Cleveland. We hold a computer database of a wide range of childcare provision from day nurseries and childminders to playgroups. So if you are working, training or simply need your child(ren) to be looked after in the short term, our staff can help find the right childcare for you.

What do we offer?
We hold many details about local:
  • Registered Day Nurseries
  • Registered Childminders
  • Registered Playgroups
  • Registered Creches
  • Registered Out of School Clubs
  • Holiday Playschemes
  • Toddler Groups
  • Events and activities for families with children.
This includes information about opening hours, vacancies, prices and whether they offer additional facilities such as a school drop off/ pick-up service.

How does the service work?
When a parent or carer calls us for information about childcare in their area, we search our database to find them the most appropriate childcare to match their needs. This could be the nearest to their home/place of work, or the most suitable for the ages of their children. The information on our database is constantly updated by team members who are in regular contact with providers, so that you can rest assured that details of vacancies, prices and opening hours are kept as accurate as possible.

When you phone us, a member of the team will ask you a few questions to establish the exact nature of your childcare requirements. Question such as:
  • How many children do you need to find childcare for?
  • How old are they?
  • What days and times do you need childcare?
  • Do they need taking to or collecting from a particular school?
  • Do they have any special requirements?
  • When do you need the care to start?

Our service commitment to you:

If you need a childcare facility:
If you are looking for a day nursery, playgroup, creche, breakfast club, after school club, holiday care or toddler group we will give you details of the nearest providers over the phone. In addition, we will send you a list in the post, which will contain details of opening hours, prices, a contact name and telephone number: We aim to send this to you the same day as your enquiry.

If you need a childminder:
We will phone all the childminders with vacancies in your area that match your requirements and establish whether or not they can take child(ren). We will aim to ring you back the same day with as many options as possible and will give you a list over the telephone numbers. We will not give them your name or contact details.

For both childcare facilities and childminders it is then up to you to contact them, make arrangements to visit and discuss your childcare needs in more detail. We would always advise you to do this as soon as possible because vacancies can become full very quickly if the childcare provider is popular.
