Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council is concerned about any child or young person who is missing education, as it may not only be their educational attainment at risk, but also potentially their safety and welfare.
The Education and Inspections Act 2006 placed a duty on local authorities in England and Wales to make arrangements to identify children and young people of compulsory school age missing education within their area.
Children and young people can go missing from education for a wide variety of reasons. Their personal circumstances or those of their families may contribute to the withdrawal process and the failure to make a transition. A child missing education could be a missing child.
These missing children are amongst the most vulnerable in the country. It is vital that practitioners in all services work together to identify and re-engage these children back into appropriate education provision with lasting success.
To limit the opportunity of children and young people becoming lost to the education system the Local Authority has developed a multi agency framework to ensure there are robust systems in place to identify, track and monitor children missing education successfully.
The Authoritys Children Missing Education Policy intends to inform Local Authority Officers, school staff, governing bodies and staff from partner organisations about the procedure and practice to be followed to ensure children who are not on a school roll are promptly identified and re-engaged with education provision.
If you have any information about a child you think may be missing from school and not receiving a suitable education please make a referral by completing the CME Notification Form at the bottom of this page or alternatively contact the CME Helpline.
