Award Honours Steel Campaigner's Legacy

AN award honouring the dedication and commitment of a tireless campaigner in the fight to restore steelmaking to Teesside is to be handed out.

Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council has joined forces with union chiefs and Redcar & Cleveland College to introduce the new Apprentice of the Year accolade in memory of the late Geoff Waterfield.

Mr Waterfield, the chairman of the multi-unions at Teesside Cast Products, died aged 43 last August just before the historic relighting of the Redcar blast furnace he had fought so hard to bring about.

The Geoff Waterfield Memorial Trophy will be presented to an outstanding apprentice at Redcar & Cleveland Colleges annual awards ceremony in November.

Nominations are open to all apprentices who are residents of Redcar and Cleveland and not just those studying at Redcar and Cleveland College.

The trophy has been donated by Mike Hill of UNISON and in addition the TUC and the National Apprenticeship Service have given their agreement to help promote and support the events leading up to the awards ceremony.

Nominations which require employers endorsement must be received by midnight on Monday 1st October 2012. The winner and their employer will be informed in October and invited to attend the Awards Ceremony, when the trophy will be presented. The judges decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
