Heating

Boiler

If your boiler is approaching or is over 15 years old, getting expensive to run or causing you problems, do something about it sooner rather than later - replace it with one that is modern, energy efficient and correctly sized for your needs.

Condensing boilers are the most energy efficient boilers that you can buy, and there are grants available to help towards the cost.

Controls

If you dont need to replace your boiler, you may benefit from improved heating controls. Is your bedroom too hot while downstairs is too cold? Is the water too hot? Is your boiler still running when no more heat is required? Better heating controls can improve your comfort, stop you wasting energy and save you money on your fuel bills.

Your heating controls should provide adequate control of:
  • room temperatures
  • the temperature of stored hot water
  • ON/OFF times for heating and hot water
  • Switching off the boiler when heat is no longer needed.
Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs) will provide the extra benefit of individual room temperature control.

By upgrading your heating controls you will improve the energy efficiency of any central heating system, and cut your costs by up to 20%. Of course you will also add to the comfort of your home by ensuring that each room is heated to the temperature you require.

Cost of improvements

How much your improvement package will cost depends on the level of works to be carried out. This can be anything from fitting a new room thermostat to a full replacement heating system. However, always ensure that anybody working on your heating system is Gas Safe registered.

Above all else, ensure that your boiler or heating appliance is checked and serviced regularly. This will stop the build up of carbon within the appliance and minimise the risk of Carbon Monoxide poisoning. See the site www.carbonmonoxidekills.com

You may be eligible for a grant to upgrade your heating system if it is not working, depending on your circumstances. Find out if you are able to access a grant by contacting the Warm & Well service in Redcar & Cleveland on 01642 771289 or email warmandwell@redcar-cleveland.gov.uk.
